The nutrition and exercise world seems to be an ever changing,
ever evolving industry, creating new trends every few months.
Who can forget the ‘Atkins diet’, the ‘chemical diet’, the ‘cleansing
diet’ and a whole other bag of trendy nutrition nightmares that tested our limits
and even put our bodies at risk?
As an athlete and exercise enthusiast, I will not deny that
I’ve had my share of crazy dieting. I remember a time where I wouldn’t mix
protein with carbohydrates (no steak and potatoes for me!). It did work-
while I was religiously sticking to it- obsessing over what I would eat every
day- but the moment I sank my teeth into a slice of wholegrain bread alongside
my fat -free roasted chicken, all hell broke lose and I gained back all the fat
I had lost overnight – what is known as the ‘yo- yo’ dieting effect.
After having been through a lot –body
and soul- at some point, I was introduced to the concept of the Paleo diet. At
first, I couldn’t even pronounce it. ‘Paleolithic’ is a Greek word that simply
means ‘that of or relating to the cultural period
of the Stone Age’. And this is what it essentially is,
going back to the nutrition basics. Bare in mind that humans had fire at the
time, so no raw recipes here- just the basic staff our ancestors were feeding
of during the Stone Age. Meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs and nuts.
